After 24 years in the Army I wish they would teach anything close to this for the leaders at all levels. I’ve seen so many leaders fail because they get wrapped up in trying to get everyone to like them. Being honest, straight to the point, and avoiding drama can garner a lot of respect and loyalty.

The view I’ll never forget! 8 months after spinal surgery I challenged myself to get to the summit of Uncompahgre Peak. I had seen this mountain top on my previous trips to Lake City, Colorado and had often thought about getting to the top. After my surgery I knew I was no longer as physically able but I knew with some determination and well thought out preparation I could still accomplish anything. I can’t describe the rush of emotions that hit me from the top of that mountain but I can say it is now my goal to find a new peak every year I go back and continue to challenge myself and grow.Never limit yourself!!

Some really great lessons here! I wish the younger me would have understood some of these better. For now, self evaluation and working to better myself a little each day will have to do.

Some of the most successful people I have met in life have clued me in on the same bit of advice. I have been told over and over again to surround yourself with people smarter than you. The only way to introduce ideas, capabilities, and levels of performance into a group that are better than what you can already provide is to invite members to your team that can do things better than you. Don’t take them as a threat but as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Shawn was one of those key leaders as I look back at my career that gave me a real gut check. He caused me to reflect on my performance and showed me the type of leader I wanted to be. I can't wait to get his book. Congratulations Shawn!

Every day is a new opportunity to grow and learn. Being open to outside input and self reflection is a key part to any successful leadership role.

Training needs to be relevant, usable, and have measurable effects on those trained. So Much of the Army online training has become nothing more than a check the block function that really had zero effect on those that completed the training. Good on the Army leadership for taking a look at this old system and attempting to change for the better!

I'm happy to see this. A LOT of these courses were just treated as "check the block" requirements that few took any benifit from.
