“I was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer in January 2007,” says Beth Phillips, RN, a Piedmont Fayette Hospital patient.

If untreated, bowel cancer can grow deeper into the wall of the bowel. From there, it can spread to lymph nodes in the area. Later, bowel cancer can spread to the liver or lungs.

End-stage is when the cancer is no longer considered curable. Thus, end-stage cancer is stage IV cancer, but some people are fortunate enough to survive stage IV with modern treatments. As treatments continue to improve, more and more people will see multi-year survival after stage IV colon cancer.

Lung and bronchus cancer is responsible for the most deaths with 125,070 people expected to die from this disease. That is nearly three times the 53,010 deaths due to colorectal cancer, which is the second most common cause of cancer death. Pancreatic cancer is the third deadliest cancer, causing 51,750 deaths.

Several studies have demonstrated that curcumin can cause the regression of polyps in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), while others have shown negative results. Wholistic turmeric (WT) containing curcumin and additional bioactive compounds may contribute to this effect.

If the cancer is in the descending colon (left side) or rectum, you may see fresh, red blood in your poop. You may pass black, tarry stools if there is bleeding in the ascending colon (blood changes while passing through the colon). Blood in the stool is alarming.
