Phillies' Jose Alvarado: Secures 12th save

    25m ago

Alvarado gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his 12th save of the season in a 4-1 win over the Red Sox.

The southpaw needed 20 pitches (13 strikes) to put away the BoSox, as he bounced back from his second blown save of the season Sunday. Since getting tagged for five earned runs Opening Day, Alvarado has emerged as the Phillies' primary closer -- he's posted a 1.91 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 31:10 K:BB through 28.1 innings, and his 12 saves are already a new career high.

  • Tanner Scott MIA RP

Scott struck out three over two perfect innings Tuesday to record his eighth save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Mets.

The lefty fired 22 of 31 pitches for strikes in perhaps his most impressive performance of the season. Scott hasn't allowed a run since the beginning of May and seems to have solved the control issues that plagued him early in the year -- over his 13-appearance scoreless streak he has a 0.73 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB through 15 innings, recording four wins, four saves and a hold.

Reds' Nick Martinez: Takes loss as primary pitcher

    1h ago

Martinez (2-4) was the losing pitcher in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Guardians. He allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two over 1.2 innings.

The last two times Martinez was used in a bullpen game, he had authored 9.1 scoreless innings (both against the Dodgers), but it wouldn't be the same Tuesday. He followed opener Brent Suter and, initially, it looked like Martinez would last longer than five outs. The right-hander needed just six pitches in a 1-2-3 second inning, but the bottom third of Cleveland's lineup got to him in the third. He issued a 10-pitch walk to Brayan Rocchio leading off the inning, followed by a double and a nine-pitch Steven Kwan single that produced two runs. Two more singles plated a third run, and Martinez was done after 39 pitches.

Cardinals' Ryan Helsley: Takes loss against Pirates

    5h ago

Helsley (2-3) took the loss Tuesday against Pittsburgh, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks with a strikeout over one inning.

Helsley took the mound in the top of the ninth with the score 0-0, but couldn't keep the game at a stalemate. The 29-year-old walked Jack Suwinski, yielded a single to Andrew McCutchen and walked Bryan Reynolds to load the bases with no outs. Suwinski and McCutchen ended up coming around to score before Helsley was able to record three outs, marking the closer's first loss since April 19 and bumping his ERA up from 2.25 to 2.79 through 29.0 innings.

Pirates' David Bednar: Hangs on for save

    5h ago

Bednar picked up the save Tuesday against St. Louis, allowing a solo home run and a walk with two strikeouts during the ninth inning.

Bednar took the mound with the Pirates ahead by two and yielded a homer to Nolan Gorman to kick off the ninth. While he retired Nolan Arenado and Brendan Donovan back-to-back, Bednar walked Jose Fermin and a catcher's interference put runners on first and second. However, Bednar avoided disaster, striking out Mike Siani to complete his 14th save. Although he owns a 5.40 ERA, Bednar ranks eighth in saves and owns a 30:7 K:BB across 28.1 innings.

Padres' Robert Suarez: Snags win Tuesday

    6h ago

Suarez (3-0) pitched 1.1 perfect innings and earned the win Tuesday over the Athletics.

Suarez kept the game tied at 3-3 during his appearance, and Kyle Higashioka delivered a walk-off blast for the Padres in the ninth inning. This was just Suarez's third appearance in June, as save chances have been rare for the Padres recently -- the team lost six of eight games prior to the start of this week's series versus the Athletics. Suarez has been dominant in the closer role with a 0.64 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB over 28.1 innings while converting all 17 of his save chances and adding one hold.
