Meaning of honors in English

An honors course or program is one or more courses of a high standard for advanced students. with honors. If a student qualifies for a degree with honors from a school, college, or university, that student has done work of an unusually high standard.

Generally, honors programs are designed for exceptionally motivated and high-achieving students who want a more in-depth and robust learning experience than you would find in regular classes. In an honors program, you learn alongside a small subset of your peers and engage in unique courses, schedules, and discussions.

Honors education is characterized by in-class and extracurricular activities that are measurably broader, deeper, or more complex than comparable learning experiences typically found at institutions of higher education.

Honors is predominantly used in 🇺🇸 American (US) English ( en-US ) while honours is predominantly used in 🇬🇧 British English (used in UK/AU/NZ) ( en-GB ). In the United States, there is a preference for "honors" over "honours" (100 to 0).

The three types of honor are bad honor, good honor, and eternal honor. People use the same word “honor” for all three, and this causes confusion. Failing to note the three kinds of honor affects our discipleship and theology.

1. Academic Awards: These include honor roll, Principal's List, National Honor Society membership, AP Scholar Awards, and subject-specific awards (e.g., Science Olympiad medals, Math Team awards, History Day awards, etc.).

The honors list is similar to the dean's list but with a lower GPA qualification. For example, a school might award students with a GPA between 3.7 and 4.0 a spot on the dean's list while students with a GPA between 3.3 and 3.6 would make the honors list.

Honors courses generally refer to exclusive, higher-level classes that proceed at a faster pace and cover more material than regular classes. Honors classes are usually reserved for talented high school students who excel in certain subjects.

An honors degree is often listed directly after your degree, separated by a comma. If you include your major or field of study, it could come after that: B.A. in History, magna cum laude. If it is a Latin title, like summa cum laude, the honors degree should be in lowercase letters and italics.
