How much money do you need for a hedge fund?
The amount you need to raise for a profitable fund depends on your costs and fee structure. While at least $10 million in assets under management may get you started, $100 million and greater is more appropriate if you want institutional investors to take you seriously.
Minimum initial investment amounts for hedge funds range from $100,000 to upwards of $2 million. Hedge funds are not as liquid as stocks or bonds either and may only allow you to withdraw your money after you've been invested for a certain amount of time or during set times of the year.
Many hedge funds require at least $1 million and a one-year commitment, sometimes more.
"Two" means 2% of assets under management (AUM), and refers to the annual management fee charged by the hedge fund for managing assets. "Twenty" refers to the standard performance or incentive fee of 20% of profits made by the fund above a certain predefined benchmark.
A common option is for the manager to take a 1% management fee with a reduction of the same amount to the performance fee so that total fees are capped at 30%. If the 1% management fee exceeds 30% of alpha during the performance period, any performance fee not recouped is carried forward to subsequent years.
Yes, you could start with much less capital, or go through a hedge fund incubator, or use a “friends and family” approach, or target only high-net-worth individuals. But if you start with, say, $5 million, you will not have enough to pay yourself anything, hire others, or even cover administrative costs.
If this structure and these objectives sound a lot like those of mutual funds, they are, but that's where the similarities end. Hedge funds are generally considered more aggressive, risky, and exclusive than mutual funds.
- Formulate a trading strategy.
- Determine the fund structure.
- Legal and regulatory requirements.
- Selecting the right service providers.
- Develop marketing and fundraising strategies.
- Launch the fund and begin operations.
Hedge funds are classified big or small based on the total amount of their AUM (Assets Under Management). A small hedge fund ranges between $10 to $100 million AUM, a mid-sized fund is between $101 to $500 million, and a large fund holds more than $500 million.
Are Hedge Funds Legal? Yes, they are legal. That is, if they are doing the right thing. The usual problems that present are insider trading and market manipulation.
How much do hedge funds typically return?
Investors now expect hedge funds to return an average of 9.75% annually within an average of 19 months, up from 6.85%, according to the survey. However, hedge funds themselves think this will take longer, up to 29 months, the survey showed.
Hedge funds in 2023 averaged a 5.7% return this year through November, according to hedge fund research firm PivotalPath. Strategies focused on equities and credit were the best performers, while macro and managed futures lagged.
For investors, credit and trading counterparties, a hedge fund failure constitutes a loss on their investments and credit exposures, whereas for the hedge fund manager, who has not committed own capital to the fund and does not manage other funds, it represents a failed asset management venture that culminates in the ...
Hedge funds are widely regarded as offering significant earning potential. Junior level employees are able to achieve salaries upwards of $500k in some places, and the best fund managers can see their net worth ultimately reach nine or even ten figures.
The all-strategy mean average management fee for active funds in the With Intelligence dataset sits at 1.4% in 2023. Goodworth believes fees sometimes range lower still: “The median fee in the typical hedge fund space we're coming up against at the moment is around 1.25% and 15%.”
Firm | Assets ($billion) | Net Gain Since Inception ($billion) |
---|---|---|
Citadel | $56.8 | $74.0 |

Millennium | 61.9 | 56.1 |
Bridgewater | 72.5 | 55.8 |
You generally must be an accredited investor, which means having a minimum level of income or assets, to invest in hedge funds. Typical investors include institutional investors, such as pension funds and insurance companies, and wealthy individuals.
Overall, the consensus is that hedge funds will continue to grow but will adapt to lower fees, greater use of technology, and increased access to retail investors.
The study was conducted by Capco, the financial services consultancy and solutions provider. A surprisingly low 38 per cent of hedge funds failed as a result of investment risk alone. It is estimated that there some US$600 billion is invested in approximately 6,000 hedge funds worldwide.
In fact, he owned and managed his own hedge fund before he took charge of Berkshire Hathaway. He introduced Buffett Partnership, an early version of hedge funds, in 1957, and it was wildly successful. In the 12 years he managed the fund, Buffett delivered compounded annual returns of 31.6 percent before fees.
What are the cons of hedge funds?
A fund of hedge funds may have extra risks. For example, it may invest in multiple hedge funds, across assets and markets. This can make it harder to know where the fund invests your money, and what the risks are. You may also have to pay more fees.
Be careful with hedge funds
The first is cost. Hedge funds often have high fees. A 2% management fee and 20% performance fee are not uncommon. Of course, those fees might be absolutely justified if the manager is doing something unique and the returns are within your expectations even after paying the fees.
A hedge fund pools investors' money to make high-risk investments with the aim of making huge returns. Because hedge funds aren't heavily regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) they can use risky investment tactics. They might borrow money, for example.
Goldman, which has helped launch and finance thousands of hedge funds, said almost all newcomers survive their first year but that only 62% of all funds remain in business after five years.
U.S. hedge funds are established primarily in Delaware because Delaware offers the most advanced business friendly law in the United States. In fact, Delaware's business friendly environment is attractive to companies across the globe, not just hedge funds. Governing law matters.
