According to our calculations, a $1000 investment made in February 2014 would be worth $5,971.20, or a gain of 497.12%, as of February 5, 2024, and this return excludes dividends but includes price increases. Compare this to the S&P 500's rally of 178.17% and gold's return of 55.50% over the same time frame.
In 1980, had you invested a mere $1,000 in what went on to become the top-performing stock of S&P 500, then you would be sitting on a cool $1.2 million today.
Imagine you wish to amass $3000 monthly from your investments, amounting to $36,000 annually. If you park your funds in a savings account offering a 2% annual interest rate, you'd need to inject roughly $1.8 million into the account.
According to Standard and Poor's, the average annualized return of the S&P index, which later became the S&P 500, from 1926 to 2020 was 10%. 1 At 10%, you could double your initial investment every seven years (72 divided by 10).
The short answer is a resounding yes. Let's take a look at why this is. While past investment performance doesn't guarantee future results, the return of S&P 500 index funds has been about 9% to 10% annualized per year over long periods, depending on the exact timeframe you're looking at.

What is the S&P 2 year return?
Basic Info. S&P 500 2 Year Return is at 16.51%, compared to 7.31% last month and 4.17% last year.
S&P 500 10 Year Return is at 174.1%, compared to 171.8% last month and 162.1% last year. This is higher than the long term average of 114.2%.
Ways to Invest in the S&P 500
The easiest way is to invest in an S&P 500 index fund. You can do this in a tax-advantaged account like a 401(k), IRA, HSA, or 529 plan. You could also open a taxable brokerage account to purchase an S&P 500 index fund.
If you invested $10,000 with founder Elon Musk 10 years ago, your stake would be worth $2.1 million now. That works out to a more than 70% average annual return. The same $10,000 put into the S&P 500 during that time grew just 274% to $37,376. That's just 14% compounded annually.
If you had invested in Netflix ten years ago, you're probably feeling pretty good about your investment today. According to our calculations, a $1000 investment made in February 2014 would be worth $9,138.15, or a gain of 813.81%, as of February 12, 2024, and this return excludes dividends but includes price increases.
If you invest $10,000 today at 10% interest, how much will you have in 10 years? Summary: The future value of the investment of $10000 after 10 years at 10% will be $ 25940.
Buffett has said that he's advised his wife to invest all her money in the S&P 500 after his death. It's simple to calculate how much money you'd have today if you did just that 20 years ago with $10,000. The total would be more than $65,000, which implies a return of 555%.
The stock market has been rallying lately, with the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) up by nearly 42% from its low point in October 2022. While new bull markets are exciting and many investors are feeling optimistic about the future, others are concerned that perhaps the best buying opportunity is already behind us.
For example, if an investment scheme promises an 8% annual compounded rate of return, it will take approximately nine years (72 / 8 = 9) to double the invested money.
Historically, the stock market has an average annual rate of return between 10–12%. So if your $1 million is invested in good growth stock mutual funds, that means you could potentially live off of $100,000 to $120,000 each year without ever touching your one-million-dollar goose.
How much should I invest at 30 to be a millionaire?
Here's the breakdown: A 30-year-old making investments that yield a 3% yearly return would have to invest $1,400 per month for 35 years to reach $1 million. If they instead contribute to investments that give a 6% yearly return, they would have to invest $740 per month for 35 years to end up with $1 million.
Many retirement planners suggest using a more modest annual return of 6% when forecasting the long-term performance of a portfolio. At 6%, after 20 years the $200-a-month portfolio would be worth $93,070. After 40 years earning the same return, your model portfolio would be up to about $398,000.
Ideally, you should stay invested in equity index funds for the long run, i.e., at least 7 years. That is because investing in any equity instrument for the short-term is fraught with risks. And as we saw, the chances of getting positive returns improve when you give time to your investments.
It's never too late.
Tax systems often offer allowances and benefits for getting started investing, particularly if it is with a retirement goal in mind.
If you're a long-term investor (and you should be) you don't need to check your stocks every day. You don't even need to check your stocks every WEEK. I only check my stocks once or twice a month to make sure the automation is working.
